What Painting Prep Includes

Prep is what separates a paint job that lasts five years from one that peels in twelve months. We fill and sand holes, caulk gaps at trim and baseboards, prime bare spots, and protect floors and furniture with drop cloths and tape. Skipping prep is the number one cause of premature paint failure.

For exterior painting, prep includes power washing the surfaces, scraping loose paint, sanding rough areas, and priming bare wood. We also caulk gaps around windows, doors, and siding joints to prevent moisture intrusion behind the new paint.

We use low-VOC paints from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore for interior work, and 100% acrylic exterior paints that resist UV fading and Salt Lake County freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Hole filling, sanding, and caulking included in every interior paint job
  • Power washing, scraping, and priming required for exterior work
  • Low-VOC paints for interior — better air quality during and after painting
  • 100% acrylic exterior paint for UV and freeze-thaw resistance

Interior vs. Exterior Painting Timelines

A single room (walls, trim, and ceiling) typically takes 1-2 days including prep, primer, and two finish coats. Drying time between coats is the primary schedule driver — we wait 2-4 hours between coats depending on temperature and humidity.

Full interior painting for a 2,000-square-foot home takes 5-8 days depending on ceiling height, trim complexity, and color changes between rooms. Dark color changes require additional coats for full coverage.

Exterior painting timelines depend on weather. We schedule exterior work during dry periods with temperatures above 50°F. A typical single-story home exterior takes 3-5 days including prep, priming, and two finish coats.

  • Single room: 1-2 days including prep, primer, and two finish coats
  • Full interior (2,000 sq ft): 5-8 days depending on complexity
  • Exterior painting requires dry weather and temperatures above 50°F
  • Dark color changes need additional coats for even coverage
