Bathroom Remodel Cost Drivers and Timelines
Tile selection is the largest cost variable in a bathroom remodel. Ceramic tile is the most affordable option, porcelain offers better durability and water resistance, and natural stone adds premium cost. The size and layout of the tile also affect installation labor — large-format tile requires fewer grout lines but is harder to cut around fixtures.
Plumbing relocation is the second biggest cost driver. Moving a toilet, shower drain, or sink supply requires opening walls and floors. Keeping fixtures in their existing locations saves significantly on labor and material.
A bathroom refresh — new vanity, toilet, lighting, mirror, and paint — takes 1-2 weeks. A full gut remodel with new tile shower, tub, flooring, and relocated plumbing takes 3-6 weeks depending on tile complexity and fixture availability.
- Tile size and layout affect both material cost and installation labor
- Keeping existing plumbing locations is the single biggest cost saver
- Shower pan installation requires waterproofing membrane and pre-slope
- Ventilation fan upgrade is recommended during any bathroom remodel
