Why I keep recommending Venetian plaster over regular paint

Look, I've spent years painting walls, and while a fresh coat of flat latex looks fine, it doesn't have any "soul." Venetian plaster is different. It's a lime-based system that we apply in thin layers, and because it's made from crushed marble and lime, it actually breathes. In a dry place like Utah, that's a huge win for your walls.
What I really like about it is the depth. When the light hits a plastered wall, it doesn't just bounce off the surface; it feels like you're looking into the wall. It gives the room a character that paint just can't touch. Plus, it's incredibly durable. I've seen this stuff outlast standard drywall finishes by decades.
Where this finish actually makes sense in your home

I usually tell people to start with a feature wall. Putting this in a whole house is a massive undertaking, but in an entryway or behind a bed? It's stunning. I also do a lot of these in bathrooms. Because it's lime-based, it's naturally resistant to mold and mildew, which is a lifesaver in high-moisture spots.
If you've got a stairwell that feels a bit boring, or a home office where you want to feel a bit more "executive," this is the way to go. It pairs really well with the clean lines we see in a lot of Salt Lake remodels, especially if you've got nice tile or custom wood trim to set it off.
Matte, Satin, or High Polish: Choosing your look

This is where the fun starts. A matte finish feels very natural and earthy—almost like old-world stone. Satin gives you a bit of a glow when the afternoon sun hits it. But the high polish? That's the "wow" factor. We burnish the final layer with a stainless steel spatula until it shines like a mirror.
Color-wise, we can do almost anything, but I usually recommend sticking to earth tones or soft greys. Because of the way we apply it, you get these beautiful variations in color that make the wall look alive. It's not uniform like a paint swatch, and that's exactly why people love it.
